eLearning Student Services Initiative Provides Increased Emphasis on Services for eLearners As part of Virginia Tech's holistic approach to distance and distributed learning, the eLearning Student Services Initiative provides increased emphasis on services for eLearners. Through collaboration and partnerships with existing student services and student affairs units, and through establishing new services that meet the specific needs of eLearners, the Institute for Distance and Distributed Learning (IDDL) will strive to ensure that all university eLearners have the services they need to successfully engage in a high quality educational experience.

Team Spectrum is the Virtual Student Center Competition recipient of the $5,000 first-place award, while both semi-finalists Hokie Designers and The Instructional Design Team kept the competition close, each earning $500 respectively. Work has begun with plans to launch the student design center prototype during the Fall 2008 semester.
The design and prototype competition winners, consisting of three teams, began in Fall 2007 to create a website or virtual environment that supported distance learners. With generous support and contributions from the Virginia Tech's Parents Fund, IDDL awarded these three teams $500 each for their original designs. The teams were then challenged to create a prototype during the Spring 2008 semester. Collectively, $7,500 in prize money was awarded to the student competitors.
